I think this design shows texture. The vegetables in this picture look very real and like you are able to touch them. You can see that they are bumpy but not hard. Every crease looks very detailed and like it is right in front of you.

This picture shows value. The picture is in black, white, and grays which makes each item stand out. The black and Grays make the white look brighter and the grays and white make the black look darker. Your eye is drawn to all the different items in the picture because of their value.

This picture represents line. The picture is made up of mostly lines. The parts of the picture that aren't lines draw your eye as well as the lines. The words have lines that stand out even more because they are different colors of lines. This picture shows a good use of lines and solid space.

This picture shows space. Most of the picture has empty space and is white. The object is a different color to get you attention.  The object is also in the middle of the picture so you look at it first. This is a good use of space because it shows that having a empty space can make a object stand out more.

This picture Represents shape. Their are a lot of different shapes in the picture that all work together. Your eye is drawn to all the different shapes because they all stand out in different way. This represents a good use of shape by the objects that were used to make those shapes.

Why/how can icons be used to communicate?

Icons can be used to communicate by showing the main idea of something  using a picture.

Via the internet, find 2 examples of common icons that clearly communicate their message. Post both in this entry.

You can avoid plagiarism in this class and in others by simply not looking at someone elses work so you don't feel temped to take it. But when you need to look at other work you should read the whole thing over and then go back and make it your own.

podcast #1 elements of design

What does it take to create good graphic design?
A understanding to the elements and pricipals of design

What is the difference between elements and principles?
Elements are components or parts that can be isolated in any visual design or work of art, they are the actual thing we add to design. Principles tell us how we should oraganize the elements on a page or screen.

Name the six (6) elements of design.
Line, shape or form, space, texture, value, and color

What can lines aid in, when alone or combined with  other lines or shapes?
The readability, appearance, and message of a design

Which lines suggest a feeling of rest? Why do you think?
Horizontal lines because they are more calm looking

Vertical lines communicate a feeling of what? Why do you think?
Loftiness because vertical lines go up and down

What lines suggest a feeling of movement? Why do you think?
Diagonal because there are many different ways to make a diagonal line

Soft, shallow curved lines suggest what? Why do you think?
Comfort, safety, and relaxation because they are very mellow looking

These lines suggest confusion and turbulence? Why do you think?
Curved lines because they can be spinning

What element defines a specific area of space?
shape

What is the difference between two dimensional shapes and three dimensional shapes?
A two dimensional shape has width and hieght and a three dimensional shape has depth along with width and hieght

Describe the difference between geometric shapes and organic shapes?
Geometric shapes are structured, often symmetrical shapes and organic shapes are found in nature or they can be man made shapes

What are abstract shapes?
They are stylized or simplified versions of natural shapes

Which basic shape projects an attitude of honesty or equality?
square

What do triangles suggest?
Action or it can also suggest stability if it is pyramid shaped

Circles convey feelings of what?
Protection or infinity

Describe positive space and negative space?
Positive space is the area which all of the elements you have added to your design. These might include text, graphics, photos, lines, or shapes. Negative space or white space, gives a place for the eye to rest, which is needed in order for the message you’re trying to communicate to be absorbed

What is texture?
Texture can refer to the actual surface of a design with the reader actually being able to feel the texture of the paper and materials in the printed design

Incorporating texture into a design can help do what?
Create a feeling of richness and depth

What is value?
The degree of light and dark in a desgn, it is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between

What is another name for value?
tone

What can the element of color do when incorporated into a design?
It can convey moods, create images, attract attention, and identify objets

intro goals

I took intro to graphic design class because it seemed fun and interesting. I am also not very good at using computers so I thought this class would help. my goal is to be able to understand and use computers better.
